Advertising Art Career

Carl graduated from CAL State at San Jose with a BA degree in Commercial Art and began his career as staff artist at Sunset Magazine in Silicone Valley, California. He worked two years at Sunset and decided to advance his art education by attending a two-year advanced course in advertising design and illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Carl worked with advertising agencies and studios in the Los Angeles area, and with that experience, he landed a job as corporate designer and art director at Western Airlines, where he was employed for two decades and took early retirement in 1985. During his employment with Western, the Society of Illustrators and the Art Director’s Club of Los Angeles honored him with numerous awards and certificates of merit for his designs and illustrations.

After retiring, Carl shared his expertise with art students at the Los Angeles Trade Technical College, where he taught Color Theory and Advertising Layout.

Teaching, Travel and Painting

Motivated by his interest in education, in 1991 Carl completed the Master Degree Program in Design offered by CAL State University at Los Angeles, and was issued a lifetime teaching credential from the State of California. During this time he was also doing independent studies with esteemed figurative artist Neil Boyle.

His wife Laura was offered a position with Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, Georgia, where they lived for three years. From Atlanta they moved to Boston and Providence. The 10 years Carl spent in the Northeast provided him with an opportunity to travel and visit world famous museums and gallery exhibits in the region as well as in Europe.

Carl has had one-man shows in Atlanta and Providence and has shown his art in various venues in Tucson, Tubac and Green Valley, Arizona. Carl specializes in figure paintings of Hispanics as well as jazz musicians. Although he is currently involved in landscape paintings, figurative and portraiture painting have always been Carl’s passion.
